5/30/2012

OKEMOS, Mich., (May 30, 2012) — The Delta Dental Foundation recently honored Sarah McDermott, D.D.S. of Germantown, Wis. with its prestigious Student Leadership Award. McDermott is a 2012 graduate of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.

McDermott was selected for the award based on her scholastic achievement, student group involvement, leadership abilities and community service. She ranked academically in the upper tier of her dental class and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honor society this spring.

During her time at U of M, she received many academic awards and was a member of several student groups, including the Scholars Program in Dental Leadership and American Association of Women Dentists. While participating in the Scholars program, McDermott worked with her mentor to complete the groundwork necessary to create a new craniofacial fellowship in the orthodontics program at the university.

In addition, McDermott participated in several community service activities, including Give Kids A Smile and Special Olympics.

Since 2001, the Delta Dental Foundation has granted a Student Leadership Award to one senior dental student from U of M and four other dental schools in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana including Case Western Reserve University, The Ohio State University, Indiana University and University of Detroit Mercy. Furthermore, the Foundation has provided eight scholarships per school, or 40 in total, to undergraduate dental students.
