What is Delta Dental Patient Direct?

Delta Dental Patient Direct is a discount card program based on the Delta Dental PPO fee schedule. For a low annual membership fee, individuals and families can receive discounted fees when they go to a participating dentist. It is not an insurance or reimbursement plan, and no insurance claims are filed.

How does a dentist become participating with Delta Dental Patient Direct?

A dentist who has an active participation contract with Delta Dental PPO is also participating with Delta Dental Patient Direct per the terms of the Delta Dental PPO contract.

How does the dental office know if a patient is a Delta Dental Patient Direct member?

The member will have a Delta Dental Patient Direct identification card to show when they come in for an appointment. The dental office should confirm membership by calling customer service at (800) 971-4108 or online through the Dental Office Toolkit.

Who can use Delta Dental Patient Direct and how do they sign up?

Anyone can purchase Delta Dental Patient Direct. There are no waiting periods, no limits on use, no age limits—everyone is accepted. Purchasers can sign up on our websites or by calling (800) 971-4108.

Is Delta Dental Patient Direct a national program?

At this time, membership is open only to Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana residents and is valid only at participating dental offices in those three states.

How does the dental office know what fees to charge for services rendered to Delta Dental Patient Direct members?

Participating dentists charge Delta Dental Patient Direct members the corresponding fees from the Delta Dental PPO fee schedule. If a procedure is not listed on the fee schedule, the dentist charges his usual fee for that service.

How are treatment fees paid?

The dental office collects all fees from the Delta Dental Patient Direct member. Members are informed that payment is due at the time treatment is rendered; however the dental office has the flexibility to make payment arrangements according to office policy.

Does the dental office have to file claims for Delta Dental Patient Direct members?

No. The dental offices do not file claims, and Delta Dental does not make any payment. If Delta Dental receives a claim for a Delta Dental Patient Direct member (who is not enrolled in any other Delta Dental program), the claim is cancelled, and no EOBs, paper or electronic, are generated.

Does Delta Dental Patient Direct have any frequency limitations, treatment limitations, excluded services, waiting periods or maximums?

No. Since it is not an insurance plan, Delta Dental Patient Direct does not have any exclusion and limitations.

Do the Delta Dental PPO fees apply to any other discount card?

No. Only Delta Dental Patient Direct members are entitled to receive treatment at the Delta Dental PPO fee level—no other non-insurance discount program qualifies.

How do Delta Dental Patient Direct members locate participating dentists?

When they sign up, members receive a dentist directory in their introductory package. They are also informed that the names, addresses, and phone numbers of local participating dentists are available by calling customer service and through our online services.
