New year, new oral health habits

Mom and daughter brushing teeth

Taking care of your teeth is super important, and it can be fun, too! Whether letting your child pick out a toothbrush or creating a sticker chart together, they can become a Smile Superhero in no time with this checklist:

Eat more tooth-friendly snacks, like crunchy fruits, veggies, cheese, and yogurt. Cookie cutters can help make fun shapes!

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes. What song can you play for two minutes to help your child keep track of time?

Drink water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages to help prevent tooth decay. Let your child pick out a reusable water bottle that they can be excited to show their friends at school!

Floss once daily with your child, making it a natural part of your routine by leaving the floss somewhere you and your child will see it often.

See an in-network dentist twice a year, to protect your smile for years to come.

This hands-on dental lesson is a fun spring activity to teach your child about plaque, and practice brushing and flossing.

What you'll need:

  • An empty egg carton
  • A single-use toothbrush
  • Floss
  • White paint
  • Moldable dough

Instructions:

  1. Use the toothbrush and white paint to paint the empty egg carton. Just like brushing your teeth, make sure you get all the tough-to-reach spots!
  2. After the paint dries, it’s time to floss! Let your child place the moldable dough between the egg carton spaces before showing them how to use floss to remove plaque. Then, it’s their turn!
