Our history

As a leading dental benefits provider for nearly 70 years, Delta Dental has always made dental care affordable for as many people as possible through quality group dental plans.

 

The early years

Founded in 1957 as Michigan Dental Service Corporation, Delta Dental began with a mission to improve access to oral health care. By the late 1960s, partnerships and legislation helped expand coverage to thousands across Michigan.

The 1970s and ‘80s

Delta Dental grew rapidly, securing major contracts with the state of Michigan and later extending services to retirees. The company also broadened its reach beyond Michigan by managing plans in Ohio and establishing Delta Dental Plan of Indiana, while formalizing its philanthropic work with the Delta Dental Foundation.

The modern era

With tech advancements and data-driven research capabilities, Delta Dental continued to expand its impact through other member companies to serve more than 12.8 million members.
